New Language of Website Design

Image

HTML 5 is the up and coming mark-up language for designing new websites. HTML5 is to display multimedia files such as video, audio, and scalable vector graphics to be displayed on websites without using plug-ins like Adobe Flash and Apple QuickTime. HTML5 also allows websites to incorporate interactive features such as drag-and-drop.

Up until recently, websites would generally be built at a fixed width, such as 960 pixels, with the expectation that all end users would get a fairly consistent experience. This fixed width wasn’t too wide for laptop screens, and users with large resolution monitors merely had an abundance of margin either side. Smartphone’s have now adapted and provide a truly usable browsing experience.

People are now comfortably using their phones to browse the web.  In addition, there is a growing consumer trend of using small screen devices (tablets and netbooks, for example) in preference to their full screen brethren for content consumption in the home.

The indisputable fact is that the number of people using these smaller screen devices to view the Internet is growing at an ever-increasing rate, whilst at the other end of the scale, 27 and 30 inch displays are now also commonplace. There is now a greater difference between the smallest screens browsing the Web and the largest than ever before.

 Image

Thankfully, there is a solution to this ever-expanding browser and device landscape. A responsive web design, built with HTML5 and CSS3, allows a website to ‘just work’ across multiple devices and screens. And the best part is that the techniques are all implemented without the need for server based/backend solutions.

Trends

North American web developers are currently adopting HTML 5 more so than anywhere else in the world with 70% of developers currently putting HTML 5 in practice. Western Europe is also uptaking the practice with 59% of developers in a recent study of 5,000 programmers accountable for using HTML 5.

Responsive Web Design and HTML 5

A responsive web design will handle the flow of our page content as viewports change but let’s go further. HTML5 offers us more than HTML 4 ever could and it’s more meaningful semantic elements will form the basis of our markup. CSS3 media queries are an essential ingredient to a responsive design but additional CSS3 modules empower us with previously unseen levels of flexibility. We’ll be ditching swathes of background graphics and complicated JavaScript, replacing them with lean CSS3 gradients, shadows, typography, animations and transformations. Before we get on with creating a responsive HTML5 and CSS3 powered web design, let’s first look at some examples of what we should aspire to. Who is already doing a good job with all this new fangled responsive HTML5 and CSS3 malarkey and what can we learn from their pioneering efforts?

JEF Media

JEF Media develop websites optimised to have a responsive web design across all platforms. Our websites are created through HTML 5 providing the latest web technology in the market, allowing for easy navigation across websites which are compatible with the latest in web technology.

Aside

Responsive Design

Nowadays it seems everything is available on the go! Businesses with an online presence are opting for responsive websites that can be viewed on a range of devices inclusing; Desktops, Smartphones, Tablets, iPads.

Responsive web design allows a website to adapt to different screens by shuffling content and realigning itself. But what are the main benefits for of such a design??

1. Usability

The foremost benefit of a responsive design is its flexibility to adapt to different screens. Your website is easily accessible on all types of devices. According to the size of the screen, the website shuffles content, images resize, and font size adjusts to deliver a quality experience to your users.

Hence no matter what device a user has, he can conveniently read and navigate the site.

2. Easy to maintain

If you create multiple versions of your website – for desktop, mobiles, tablets, etc., you will end up updating all the different versions every time there is a change, be it adding a new web page, editing content or even correcting a typo. Now that is double the efforts and time.

On the other hand, a responsive web design is easy to maintain simply because it is a single website that opens seamlessly on different devices. When you need to update the site, website administrators have to update only on one platform. And you have only one set of content to manage that saves precious time and money.

3. Better SEO

Responsive web design is now becoming a must for making your site search engine optimized. Instead of optimizing content or building links for multiple sites, responsive design creates a single model that is easy to update and optimized for all devices.

Besides, the URL structure also remains the same for all devices be it an iPad, desktop computer or a mobile that makes it easy for Google to index your site.

4. Boost up sales

If a user encounters a problem while opening your site in his preferred device, you are sure to lose a potential customer. However, when a user can access your site from any device, he is unlikely to switch to a rival brand. An enhanced user experience means increased sales and better conversion rates.

Considering all these benefits, it is no wonder that more and more companies are turning to responsive web design. It is easy to maintain and update, ensures a user friendly experience across all devices and browsers, and ultimately guarantees better return on investments.

Managing Social Media; Tips for Small Businesses

With the rapid growth and development of social networking sites in the last number of years it’s no wonder social media marketing has become so important among small businesses.

Not only are the major brands such as Coca-Cola or Nike using social media, but a growing number of small businesses are using the platform to enhance their business.

Let’s examine how social media platforms could enhance your small business.

Often businesses can find it hard to gauge the power of social media. The best way to measure influence is by monitoring traffic to websites. Most online users tend to rely on social media when it comes to making a purchasing decision about a product or service. This often comes in the form a recommendation.

People who use social media are more likely to buy or pay for a product/service from a business they are connected with. Facebook business pages have the highest number of generated customers so utilising such a platform is a must for any small business.

Negative perceptions

  • Small business owners often have the notion that social media is extremely hard and time-consuming.
  • Too much social media marketing somehow creates unwanted spam for potential customers.

Positive perceptions

  • Social media is often used as a reference to determine the legitimacy and reputation of a business during purchasing.
  • Improved branding has human and search engine benefits.
  • Customer retention is often enhanced by a strong and responsive social media presence.
  • Word-of-mouth referrals regularly happen on social media, driving traffic to the website.

Small businesses should realise the role social media is playing and the benefits it can have for the business going forward. Here are some tips on how to manage social media:

1. Share valuable, educational, and engaging content to your target audience.

2. Share content to a particular social platform when traffic is at its peak.

3. Start discussions and keep the audience enticed by ask questions.

4. Use social media for customer support and feedback collection.

5. Choose the social platform where most of your target audience are and make the most of it.

6. Manage only a handful of social media accounts to not lose focus on your social media marketing campaign.

7. Don’t automate highly customized content posts. It is better to show the personality and human-side of the business.

8. Don’t automate business “Thank you” posts. When a customer reaches out to you, find a way to build the contact into a relationship with a highly customized (i.e. human) response.

9. Don’t follow every person who follows you. Many are machines and bring no value.

10. Don’t “re-tweet” from other sources. It will only reduce the quality of your social media presence.

Swapping Football Boots for a Shirt and Tie!!

Me at the JEF Media HQ

Myself at the JEF Media HQ

About me..

Considering this is my first blog I thought I should explain a little bit about myself and what we do here at JEF Media. Firstly, my name is Tom King, a native of Castlebar, Co.Mayo.

Moving across the pond..

My journey to becoming a Marketer has not been what one might call normal. I never got round to doing a leaving cert in secondary school because at the tender age of 16 I was given the opportunity to play football or soccer (depending on how deep your roots are in the GAA) with Plymouth Argyle F.C in England. Football has always been my first love but after returing home upon expiry of my contract I knew that getting an education was paramount.

Fast forward 4 years and I am delighted to have completed a Bachelor of Business Honours Degree in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology where I specialised in Marketing. I always had an interest in Business but after the first few years in college it was evident that Marketing was what I wanted to do.

Why Marketing??

The area of marketing is exciting, things are constantly evolving and you have to be on the pulse with what is going on. Digital Marketing is something I have a huge passion for and in particular the Social Media aspect.Social Media is playing an increasing role in the attraction and retention of customers for businesses. It can open the door to endless possibilities, generating leads and more importantly bringing in revenue. Having a strong online presence can also help increase a company’s reputation. The essential major social media networks that are used today are; Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter, with other platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest growing in popularity. All of the previous can be used to generate business by marketing your product/service and ultimately drive traffic to your website.

“The key is not to try and do them all but concentrate on a select few and do them well.”

“While many businesses have a social media presence, many are not engaging on those platforms and thus not meeting their goals.”

Social Media Marketing is about being interactive with customers. It is important to engage with customers and not just post something on the company Facebook or LinkedIn page and hope for a handful of responses. Using social media effectively can help you foster a community around your business. If customers feel comfortable with your brand they tend to give out more information and this valuable data can be used to help the business going forward.

JEF Media; What we do..

At JEF Media we are passionate about what we do;  “Helping businesses get more business”. We have a dedicated team of Marketers and Designers all led by company MD Jonathan Hayes. The company specialise in Online Marketing including; Social Media Strategies, Design, Brand Development and Web Development. We also know a thing or two when it comes to traditional media.
